Video: How RMDs and account level distribution plans interact
Video Transcript
hello this video explains how our new
0:04
feature that allows you to specify
0:07
account distributions from an individual
0:09
account um interacts with required
0:11
minimum distributions so here's a plan
0:14
for somebody who's already 75 so into
0:16
required minimum distribution phase uh
0:19
with a $2 million Ira uh nothing else in
0:21
the plan except that we are we're trying
0:23
to take things first from taxable
0:25
accounts then tax deferred then taxfree
0:28
but because we're already in the RM D
0:30
Stage uh this person has an
0:32
$81,000 300 uh $81,300
0:36
distribution this year now if I add a
0:40
distribution plan to this account of
0:44
$90,000 a
0:47
year as you see
0:49
here instead of that 81,000 I'm taking
0:53
990,000 and then as time goes on
0:57
eventually my rmd by 202 is higher than
1:00
the 90,000 and so the system is going to
1:04
take more than the 90,000 in order to to
1:07
hit the
1:09
rmd now what if there were another Ira
1:13
in the plan that didn't have a
1:15
distribution uh plan so early on the
1:19
90,000 from the uh the special Ira where
1:22
I've put the distribution plan is more
1:24
than enough to cover the rmd but in the
1:28
next year it's not quite enough and so
1:30
we take the excess from this other rmd
1:34
from this other
1:36
IRA and that continues until that Ira is
1:40
gone at which point now we need to take
1:42
it from from that special
1:46
Ira if we had a lower distribution
1:50
amount uh for example 10,000 a year
1:53
instead of 90,000 a year from that Ira
1:56
the plan is still going to try to um to
2:01
follow your instructions on the
2:02
distribution amount um and it'll do that
2:05
as long as it can which in this case um
2:09
by 2026 it can no longer keep to 10,000
2:13
because it's going to take the entire
2:14
amount from this Ira um plus EXs here to
2:19
cover the full rmd then after that all
2:22
the rmd is going to come from from that
2:25
special Ira so to sum up um if you
2:29
specify a distribution plan from an
2:32
account that has
2:33
rmds um the software is going to do its
2:36
best to follow those uh those
2:38
instructions but it will override them
2:40
and take more uh if it needs to in order
2:44
to follow rmd rules hope this helps
2:46
thanks
